Peace, Love, Pot. Symbolism. Every generation has iconic images. During the Vietnam War Era I thought drugs were put out there on purpose to numb us to what we saw on TV and magazines. Back then, protests and prolific unemployment (people with Masters Degrees were driving taxi cabs) were creating a surge in profound and sometimes horrific images.
Is today different? Again, we have an economic crises punctuated by an ugly war. What images are out there?Did we really elect self proclaimed racist-sexist as our figure head? Should we all be able to do and say what ever we want? What will today’s iconic symbols be? A first lady sprawled naked on a fur rug? Do we care?
It’s just a little unnerving that a National Populist Workers Party is just around the corner. Likened to my parents “great depression” generation, where propaganda ruled and censorship shut us up. Where is the art of today?
Grow your own tranquilizers
Six plants per person (Is that right?). It creeps in as a health benefit but perhaps just a pacifier to the out-spoken educated. So what’s happening while us graduates are stoned out?
We’re being censored. Recently, the famous 1972 Napalm Girl Photo by photographer Nick Ut was banned by Instagram for displaying nudity. Images such as these swayed public opinion that ended the war, at least that’s how I remember it.
As artist we should not be shut up. We have a president who speaks his inner-self – why should we be any different? There should be no shame, or penalty, for displaying our work. So does this green leaf symbol represent heath, pacifism, activism, or populism? Or, just a warning to be careful what you eat.
